Alex's favorite thing about Wednesday was that she had home economics right before her lunch period.
Out of all of the classes that she had chosen to take for her freshman year, she knew that it would be favorite. Kenneth had been full of nothing but good things to say about the culinary program at Parkdale Community School, and now that she had experienced almost two months of lessons, Alex had to agree completely. The instructor was excellent, and their lessons were informative. Plus, they got to try their hand at making all sorts of different dishes. Nothing too complicated yet, but Kenneth had told her that they'd get to more exciting meals as she got into higher grade levels.
On this particular afternoon, they had been allowed to make cupcakes of their choice. From scratch, of course. Not that Alex had any problem with that, it was a routine she had been through more times than she could count. And since Kenneth was taking [in his own words] a 'mental health day' off from school, the flavor of the batter was a fairly easy choice. Poppyseed lemon, Maxine's favorite. The frosting would have to be made from scratch as well, not a problem; colored flamboyantly, to keep Maxxie's attention.
By the time that the bell rang, she had long since finished, as well as cleaned up the station that she had been sharing with another girl from her class. She'd even helped the girl manage not to completely burn the chocolate cupcakes she'd been making for her boyfriend. Slinging her bag over her shoulders, the brunette headed out of her classroom, and navigated easily toward the nearest exit. It was a nice afternoon, for November, with sunshine and a hint of a cold breeze.
She moved over toward where she usually ate with her siblings, when the weather permitted. A set of picnic tables set up outdoors, just a few paces from the entrance to the cafeteria. There were a few other people already sitting, but Alex managed to find one empty table for herself and Maxxie. She set down the plate she had been carrying, holding one dozen poppyseed lemon muffins, with a wide array of rainbow frosting. Dropping her bag down onto the table beside them, she got out her sweater and pulled it on, before grabbing the lunch that Kenneth had packed for her, and settling in to wait patiently for her sister.
